The Staufen "Fasnatziestag"

When Carnival reaches its climax, the people of Oberstaufen make ready for another festive day "Fasnatziestag". Carnival costumes are nowhere be seen on this day. The scene is one of traditional costumes and flags. This day is im remembrance of the Great Dying, when the plague took its toll in 1635.

Kulturtupfer - a festival for Oberstaufen

Every autumn Oberstaufen holds a festival for all ages. The events are based on three pillars: classic, jazz and cabaret, and lend an artistic tone to the spa town.

Viehscheid - driving down the cattle

On this day the cattle, which has spent the summer on the alpine pastures, is driven back down to valley level, to be given back to its rightful owner. The herder calls out the names of the farmers to whom each head of cattle belongs. The cattle is adorned with ornate headdresses and the arrival in the valley is the start of celebration.  The "Staufner Viehscheid" takes place once a year on the 2nd weekend in September. The following week Thalkirchdorf has the same celebration.
